Other Notes:

The subject matter here represents the moving of the bodies of St. Peter and St. Paul as related in the "Legenda Aurea" from the first centuries of Christianity. Sources for the etching format may have come from a book by A. Bosio "Roma Sotteraneu nella quale si tratta delli sacri cimiteri de Roma" first published in Rome in 1632. There is an etching by Sebastiano Fulcaro included in the Bosio book, which in turn was to have represented a mural painting from the old portica of the Basilica of St. Peters, destroyed in 1609-10.

Condition:
Very good condition. A superb, dark and early impression with strong contrasts and no signs of wear. The fine vertical lines above the head of the upper saint printing clearly. Trimmed to or just outside the platemark. Some skillful backing and strengthening of the paper on the reverse at the corners, and in a small 1” area to lower center and upper center. Hinge mounted to new rag mats. Size is to the border outline. Extension with the signature is 3/8”. Collectors ink stamp “ES” on reverse.
