This print shows an abstract depiction of an eighth century statute Senju Kannon, the goddess of mercy. The statue has 20 pairs of arms reaching out form the body, this then is encircled with an abundance of smaller arms with hands extending outward. The effect is that there is unlimited help available to those who call on her. Hodaka’s technique of printing and coloring is as important as the subject. Black is a predominant color in his Buddhist prints, unlike any earlier or later print series. Eugene Skibbe gives an explanation. “The figure is viewed from the front, with the side on the left highlighted in light gray that is printed with a zokin-zuri technique. The technique creates a light and dark mottled effect. A black shadow falls on the right side over the face, body and hands, suggesting the figure’s volume. An overlay of transparent yellow, for the gild, has been applied only to the staff and outer effulgence. Behind the head a yellow orb comes out of the margin from the top. Otherwise the background on the left is burgundy overprinted with black, and on the right burgundy overprinted with rouge. In terms of mood, abstract modeling, and printing techniques this is the most complex print Hodaka had done up to this point.” (Yoshida Hodaka: The Magic of Art).
