Other Notes:

One of nine prints of Japanese Scenery Yoshida created this year, along with the eight print “Scenes of Cherry Blossom” series.

The Yasaka Shrine (Yasakajinja), also known as the Gion Shrine, is a Shinto shrine in the Gion District of Kyoto. The popular city shrine is famous for its Gion Matsuri, one of Japan's largest festivals. Yasaka Shrine was first built in 656 AD. It was dedicated to Susa-no-o, the god of prosperity and good health, and his wife and 8 children. Most of the buildings that remain today are from a reconstruction in 1654. In 869, the omikoshi (portable shrines) of Gion Shrine were paraded through the streets of Kyoto to ward off an epidemic that had hit the city. This was the beginning of the Gion Matsuri, an annual festival that has become world famous.

The "jizuri" seal on Yoshida Hiroshi prints is the notation he used to signify that the block was carved and printed under his supervision and met his quality requirement. It is only used on lifetime prints.

Condition:
Very Good condition. The right margin has two ink marks from the Kento mark. There is a tight vertical printing crease at bottom left of center that goes 4” into the image. Have seen similar creases on other copies of this print. A few surface rubs in the deep red color area of the roof in the upper right but not such that the paper surface is abraided. Not matted or mounted.
