Other Notes:
Each person in this print has an active presence, more communal than any works of Toshi's father where people were included in the scene. However, only the two women and the child in the foreground are fully presented. The others are more ghostly forms which may symbolically refer to the absence of so many men in the wartime activities of that time. Shinjuku was an entertainment district near several major rail stations. This 1938 image was the first print made by Toshi since he stopped printmaking in 1930.
Condition:
Fine condition other than slightly wavy margins and some light printing ink residues on the margins, mostly from the Kento marks, typical of Yoshida printing. Not matted or mounted.
