The town of Sakaki is located near Nagano in Chubu. That appears to be the subject of this image, although the word also applies to the Sakaki tree, which is evergreen and sacred in the Shinto religion. The sakaki played a significant role in the Japanese creation story. The large forest in the background of this scene may therefore be reference to those trees. | ||||
