Description:
From the series “Ten Sights of Shinano” published by the Watanabe Color Print Company. Plate 115 in Shinsui Catalogue. Gauffrage effect in the white clouds from leaving that area without ink. Brush signature and seal upper left, block date mark of Showa 23, 3rd month (Showa niju san nen san gatsu) in the lower right margin, Watanabe printers seal “I” (Ono Gintaro) in lower left margin, Watanabe 6 mm publisher’s seal “J” (1946-57) in lower right, title in upper right margin.

A rural scene around Mt. Asama. At 8,425 ft (2,568 m) in height, Asama is one of Japan’s largest and most active volcanoes. It is on the island of Honshu and is 140 km north of Tokyo. the mountain overlooks the town of Karuizawa. Shinsui shows the volcano with steam venting from the upper crater. A worker tilling the field at center right is dwarfed by the mass of the mountain. The mountain is in the area of the town of Shinano and the Shinano River.    
Condition:
Very good condition. Soft warm paper tone. Slightly wavy margin edges. Pencil notation on the reverse bottom margin. Deckle edge right. Embossing in the cloud area. Pencil notation on the back side at the bottom edge. Not matted or mounted.
