A rural scene around Mt. Asama. At 8,425 ft (2,568 m) in height, Asama is one of Japan’s largest and most active volcanoes. It is on the island of Honshu and is 140 km north of Tokyo. the mountain overlooks the town of Karuizawa. Shinsui shows the volcano with steam venting from the upper crater. A worker tilling the field at center right is dwarfed by the mass of the mountain. The mountain is in the area of the town of Shinano and the Shinano River. | ||||
