From the “Second Series of Modern Beauties". (Gendai bijinshū dai-nishū - Maiko) published by Watanabe Shōzaburō. Brush signature “Shinsui” and red seal “Shinsui-in” at upper left. Also in the upper left is the date of Showa 7 years, 10 months, 15 days, (October 15, 1932). The early Watanabe publisher’s 6 mm round seal in the lower left of the image and the copyright seal “C”, used 1929-42, in the lower left margin. (Both seals are commonly found on this image.). On the reverse the red limitation seal with the number 164 of 250, with a small red publisher’s seal below. | (click on image for photos) |

The sash ornament is in the form of a “tsuzumi”, a drum-shaped object like an hour glass. The green object visible at the top of her sash is a purse or small toilet kit. Reference: Plate 66 in Shinsui Catalogue. Plate 72 in the Shinsui listing in “The Female Image”. #158 in the Blair Catalogue (Toledo 1936). | ||||

Very good condition. Faint glue residue on top corners reverse side. Slight warm tone to the paper. Faint blush around the eyes clearly showing. Embossing on the white parts of the Kimono. Not matted or mounted. | ||||
