Other Notes:
Here we have a hot summer day in the middle of Main Street in Edo. On the right edge an old man reveals his teeth as he bites a melon from the melon vendor shown below him. Above, a delivery boy, clothes open to the air, carries stacked noodle boxes from the Soba shop “Tōkyōan (The white noren in the center). In the center, under the double parasole, a group of Sumiyoshi dancers (seasonal minstrals) from the Sumiyoshi Shrine near Osaka; they perform shrine dances in return for donations. At the time of this drawing, they have become Edo street performers with distinctive costumes, usually made of cotton. The parasole has a white “gohei” (wooden wand with white streamers attached). Following them is a distinctive sort of street minstral, an onna-dayū. these are women who sing songs to samisen accompaniment. They were outcasts (hinin class) and were always followed in there rounds by a father or husband. She seems to be following the Sumiyoshi. These outcast women were forbidden to wear silk, only cotton. Therefore they had very stylish cotton kimonos. She wears high geta clogs. Interestingly, this street scene in in the cotton sellers district. The store on the right is Shirokiya, founded in 1662, later it evolved into part of the Tōkyū store chain.
