Other Notes: |
Here Hiroshige has presented another distant view framed by a large foreground object, in this case a pleasure boat setting out from the Mukōjima side of the Sumida River and heading for the San’ya Canal. The passengers have just enjoyed the cherry blossoms at the Mimeguri Shrine; a few blossoms are even floating in the air. The only figure, that of a Geisha partially visible on the left sitting in the boat. An elaborate hair pin juts out into the background sky. In the center distance, the temple roof with the five storied pagoda of Asakusa Kannon (Formerly known as Kinryūsan Sensōji; the Azuma bridge built in 1774 to the left (aka Ōkawa Bridge) and Fuji above it in blue with a white top. Differences in printing occured after the first edition was printed. While this is an early printing here are some differences from the first printing: Darker green colors as used in the reed bed to left of boat, trees on distant shore and replacing a lighter green on the small boats. The bokashi of the upper sky is more mauve at the top vs deep blue on 1st, black boat hull somewhat less black, pink shy at right horizon extended across the print on 1st. Same wood grain effects showing. Title cartouche with more red bokashi at top on 1st. |

Condition: |
Very good condition. Small thin spot in the sky 1 inch below the title block and to the left. Two small spots of glue residue on the reverse at upper image edge and a spot of soiling on the reverse upper left margin (see photo). Ink spot at upper margin left of the date seal. Small soil spot on reverse right margin 3” from top of image (see photo) showing as a darker brown spot on the front at the very left image edge in the roof of the boat Small thick spot in the paper just left of the pagoda and also one on the hull of the boat near the waterline. There is a touchup on the cherry blossom floating just forward of the vertical pillar of the boat canopy. Print was formerly in mat and there is a faint mat line visible on the right side between the sail of the boat and the red series block 1/4" into the image. There is a slight warmer tone to the sky that would have been exposed outside the former mat. No mat line visible on the left side. The original red tone to the sky at the horizon line is mostly faded away. | ||||
