Other Notes:

This sort of birds eye view favored by Hiroshige shows part of the great inner moat of Edo Castle, now known as Sakurada Moat. The steep bank on the right is a perimeter bank of the Castle. On the left center is the red gated great house of Ii Naosuke, lord of Hikone, a close adviser to the Shogun. Unfortunately his house was removed for park space. Two wells are visible along the moat path, the closest is the 3-bucket “Cherry” well, just to the right of the guardhouse near the left margin. Further up the path is the “Willow” well marked by the willow tree. (Remnants of both still there). Differences in printing occured after the first edition was printed. While this is an early printing here are some differences from the first printing:

Sky color very similar, less bokashi (shading) of the deep Prussian blue around the moat edge and in the intensity of the blue in the moat. More deep blue at lower right corner than 1st. White gap between two short pines at horizon line not on 1st, shading of top of house roof gone, less detail in the green tree top areas. The pathway to bottom left is a single shade with mica, the 1st had a subtle blend of colors. Geisha 2nd from right has difference color kimono. Title cartouche same pattern but with more muted cloud color.

Condition:
Very good condition. Binding holes in top margin. Light age tone to the sheet, faint diagonal crease across the lower right corner crossing about 1” into the image. Traces of mica in the gray/green colors. Not matted or mounted.
