Original preface by William Cullen Bryant. The original steel engravings were used, the prints were hand colored and then reproduced in book form. Each work to a single page of gloss finish heavy paper. This book contains 49 plates by artists such as Gifford, Martin, Perkins, Waud, Kensett, Whittridge, Sheppard, Fenn, and many more. Each engraving has the title listed below the work and in fine print just below the bottom margin of the work the artist, the engraver, and the Library of Congress registration notation.
