Description:
Kennedy Catalogue #76, second state of three, printed on tissue thin Japan paper with wide margins, brilliant early impression. One of the group that was published as “16 Etchings” (the Thames Set). In this state the foul biting in the sky of the first state is removed and replaced with fine lines, a building with a tower appears on the upper left; all prior to the reworking of the sky and the clear outlining of the smoke from the steamboat that appear in the third state. Signed on plate lower right “Whistler”.

Other Notes:
An historic scene no longer visible: The bridge is an old suspension bridge that was later taken down and moved to Clifton on the river Severn (near Bristol) in order to make room for the new railway bridge to Charing Cross Station.    
Condition:
Very good condition. Pencil notations on the rear, bottom margin. The sheet has original and ample and wide margins on three sides, top margin ample but trimmed. A small pin hole size perf in the sky at the upper right just below the platemark. Matted in new 100% rag mats, floating mount, deckle sheet edge on bottom and right.
