Other Notes:
Having reached the far point of the upriver journey at Fort McKenzie (near Great Falls, Montana), they returned down river to evade the approaching winter of 1833, arriving at Fort Union (near Williston, North Dakota) on September 29, 1833. Here Bodmer did the wash sketch of the powerful Cree medicine man known to the French as “le Sonnant”. Mahsette used a bear scalp as a charm and was highly respected for his ability to tell the future. Maximilian has a detailed entry about him dated October 16-29, 1833. Bodmer had to make a hasty sketch using pencil and wash on paper as the chief would not sit still due to the light bothering his eyes. The right eye had an affliction which the engraver of the aquatint depicted as “clouded” such as might be seen of a cataract.
