Description:
Aquatint, hand colored, Tableaux #6, first state, printed by Bougeard, Paris, for issue with the journal "Travels in the Interior of North America in the Years 1832-34," by Prince Maximilian of Wied-Neuwied. Sheet titles in English, French and German, "Carl Bodmer/Direct" embossed blind stamp, lower center; "C. Bodmer pinx ad Nat" (left), "imp de Bougeard" center, "L. Weber & Hurlimann, SC", right. French, English and German publishers printed lower. (Published by Ackermann and Co., 96 Strand, London.) Printed on heavy velum paper. Traces of varnish over the hand coloring.

Other Notes:
From the same time period as the “The Steamer Yellowstone” print, but not specifically dated in Bodmer’s notes. There are several original watercolors of the snags, particularly one that is dated April 25, 1833, but they do not show the “Yellowstone”. That was added during the engraving process. See Bodmer bio for more details on the publication.    
Condition:
Some spotting and staining in the margins, dotted spotting across upper right part of the image area and water stain on upper sheet margin (see detail photo). Moderate age toning on front sheet margins, staining and soiling on reverse. Small 1/2" tear at upper center sheet margin. Pinhole size perf in the right side trees. Residue of old mounting tape on rear upper edge. Small 1/4" loss on lower left sheet corner. Full original sheet. Matted in new 100% rag mats, corner mounts.
