Other Notes: |
This is a scene of a hovel in the Quarter Mouffetard, Paris. A doorway frames the scene, a device Whistler frequently used that would allow the objects of the work to appear to be in back of the surface of the paper. We approach the scene as if peering into a deep space, the girl bending forward with a small face and heavy hair presents an aspect of frailty whereas the boy is all jauntiness. The accessories and structural elements of the room give us the feeling that this is a rather squalid interior. | ||||
