The artist, working within the etching medium needs only the black and gray tones to show exquisite details and contrast. Aquatint and mezzotint are sometimes used and color very sparingly. His purpose is to capture the ephemera of Japan that is gradually disappearing from the landscape, particularly rural Japan. Thatched roofs are a particular fancy. He travels to find his scenes, which are not invented, but drawn from nature. His list of exhibitions and collections is extensive. One of particular significance is the annual CWAJ Print Show held each October in Tokyo. 2009 was the 44th year his work has been accepted into this show, which is considered the premier contemporary print show in Japan. |
