Shinoda, Toko b. 1913 Manchuria

Resides: Tokyo

As an early student of calligraphy, she has melded that art into her lithographic technique where the litho crayon and the litho tusche can appear as calligraphy. The litho stone duplicates the shading of a loaded brush over absorbent paper. Each work also includes a hand applied brush stroke, sometimes in color. In her compositions, emptiness is considered weight, blank space is compared to shape and size. A few crisp lines are reflections of feminine sensibility.

She has had numerous exhibitions, both solo and group, in Japan and abroad, starting in 1940. Her lithographic work began in 1960 after she had turned to more abstract imaging. Of particularly note is the annual CWAJ Print Show in Tokyo, one of the largest juried contemporary print shows in Japan held each October. The year 2008 was the 40th consecutive year Toko had works accepted for this show and her litho "Fulfillment" was chosen for the 2005 Catalogue cover art. This was the second time one of her entries had been a cover selection - the other in 1975)
