YONGSHENG, Yang b. 1967 Qujing City, Yunnan Province.  

 

Mr. Yongsheng was trained at the Yunnan Art School, a contemporary center for Chinese print making, graduating in 1991. Yunnan, in southwestern China is home to many ethnic groups and these peoples are reflected in the artist's work. He is a member of the China Artists Association and became Director of the Qujing Print Institute in 1999. In 2002 he became Chairman of the Qujing Artist Association. Together with the Yunnan Fine Art Academy, these organizations are the mainstay of print art at the Yunnan Art School.

In 2006 he came to Hawaii under a Ford Foundation scholarship to study for a masters degree in fine arts/printmaking. Early awards for his work were an Outstanding artwork prize from the Canadian Maple Leaf Exposition in 1997 and second prize at the 5th Yunnan Print Exposition in 1999. Additional awards followed including 2nd prize of the Yunnan Art Works Exhibition in 2004. He was in 26 exhibitions between 1990 and 2004. His early works are in very small editions and are in a number of museums in China.
