Walter Ernest Tittle 1883 - 1966

Walter Ernest Tittle (Am.)

Born 1883, Springfield, Ohio
Died 1966, Carmel, California

Tittle studied at the New York School of Art and at the Art Students League with Chase, Henri and Mora. He is generally known as a portrait artist but was also an etcher and a well known writer. He illustrated for magazines such as Harper’s, Scribners and Century. He was also popular in England. His works are in the Victoria and Albert, the National Portrait Gallery and the British Museum.  He held membership in the Royal Society of Artists in London and in the United States in the Chicago Society of Etchers and the Society of American Etchers.

One of his best known writing assignments was a series of interviews, with drawings, of “Interesting” Americans for Century Magazine in 1925. He wrote and illustrated several books. Our etching of George and Martha Washington, fits right in with the historical subjects he liked.
