(Austrian-American) Born 1896, Vienna, Austria Margulies moved to the United States at an early age. He was able to study at the Art Students League with Joseph Pennell, at the National Academy of Design and in Paris and Vienna. A man of versatile talents he is best known for portrait paintings. His lithographs and etchings are usually in portrait style. His memberships included the Society of American Etchers, the Chicago Society of Etchers and the American Watercolor Society. Shows and exhibitions were numerous from the 1920’s to the 1970’s. He illustrated several graphics books including “The Art of Aquatint”. His style is realistic never venturing into the abstract, contrary to the trends after 1950. He was commissioned regularly to do portraits. He was active in the Rockport Art Association (Massachusetts) and maintained a summer studio at Glouster, an area that also attracted Edward Hopper, John Sloan and Leon Kroll. |
